The Miao people mainly live in the SW and South Central parts of China. Designer Koyal’s hometown is in the mountainous region of Guizhou Province (SW China). The Miao people are very good at handcraft. Batik art is passed down from generation to generation and is taught only to women. They use their hands to create and express their respect for the gods, nature, and their understanding of life.
When Koyal was a little girl, she began to learn batik from her mother & through nature. When Koyal found her teacher Yang, she was told that it takes time to get along with indigo and to understand its ways.
Unlike many indigo products out there today, Koyal’s dye tank uses no chemicals. She personally takes care of it every day. The Miao people’s indigo is completely handmade ~ from planting, harvesting, and dyeing without adding any chemicals throughout the process. Koyal plants her indigo in her own yard, harvesting, fermenting, and dyeing. She finds that she can truly experience the beautiful qualities of the plant by smelling, touching, and feeling it through caring for the plants and dyeing with it. This is a gift that nature offers us.
